Research area 4:

The power of culture and stories

Research area 4 explores how cultural notions, values and narratives about this shape land use and land use change in Norway, including Sápmi and other areas where minority and indigenous perspectives are central. We investigate how different understandings of nature, landscape and development influence decisions, conflicts and visions of the future. The work builds on insights from research on a diversity of values (RA1) and contributes to research on governance, management (RA2) and mapping (RA3). At the same time, we highlight experiences, knowledge and narratives from across society, with particular attention to the Sami, other minority groups and groups that are often underrepresented in land-related decision-making processes. A central goal is to understand how historical experiences, values, power relations and narratives can contribute to both cooperation, resistance and conflict related to land use. We develop and test creative and inclusive methods to collect, explore and communicate such narratives. Through innovative forms of local participation, we aim to empower individuals and communities to contribute to sustainable solutions to challenges related to land use and biodiversity. Our work is rooted in respect for different perspectives, indigenous and minority knowledge, and the intrinsic value of nature.
