Research theme 3.3:

Further development of geospatial tools for sustainable land use

RT3.3 develops and tests innovative geospatial frameworks and AI-powered tools that translate geographic knowledge into transparent, reliable and inclusive decision support for sustainable land and nature management. The work builds on synergies with the TRUST Center for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence, experiences with geospatial modeling and decision-making under uncertainty, as well as insights from RT3.1 and recommendations from RT3.2.

The theme translates conceptual, user-oriented and critical perspectives into concrete technological solutions, with particular emphasis on usability, transparency and integration of different perspectives in geospatial tools. The work includes the development of geospatial frameworks that connect functionality, data quality and user needs to support transparent and consistent spatial planning.

Furthermore, it explores how probabilistic modeling, advanced AI methods and purpose-built visualization solutions can strengthen the decision-making basis in land and nature management. A central theme is how trust, reliability and uncertainty can be handled in AI-supported geospatial applications, with particular emphasis on explainability, traceability and user trust.

Through testing in different case areas and planning contexts, RT3.3 investigates how geospatial frameworks and AI-based tools can be integrated into practical work processes, planning routines and impact assessments, and how they can contribute to inclusive and transparent decision-making processes across different user groups.
